General Ibrahim Babangida: A Legacy of Power, Corruption, and Controversy
General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB, is a Nigerian military leader and politician who served as the military President of Nigeria from 1985 to 1993.
He received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army in 1963 at the age of 22. He served as a commanding officer during Nigeria's civil war from 1968 to 1970 and rose to the rank of Major General by 1983.
Babangida's regime is estimated to have misappropriated at least 12 billion dollars during his eight-year rule.
Out of 117 people executed during Nigeria's military rule, 78 (67%) were executed under Babangida's regime.
The Babangida era is characterized by a burgeoning political culture of corruption in Nigeria.
Babangida's regime faced allegations of human rights abuses, including the detention without trial of thousands of government critics and the silencing of opposition organizations.
